Matte Effect Photoshop Tutorial

PDF tutorial link: Matte Effect

I was inspired to do the matte effect photoshop tutorial after a long desire to learn for myself the cool effect I found on my iPhone apps, VSCO Cam and after light. I researched and found a few different methods and went with the one that added the effect using the curves and levels adjustment layers because they were nondestructive to the actual image. I think that this tutorial is a relevant topic because it allows us to learn about something that we use so readily on our phones that we can apply it to our high quality photography on photoshop.

The process to create the effect is simple fist create an curve adjustment layer. Then in the lower left corner grab the curve and slide it up until you like the effect. Move the top right corner down slightly. Then lastly to finish drag the curve down in the center, just slightly. This will add contrast. Next you can add and adjustment layer for levels. Focus on the lower slide and move both arrows towards the center. Start with the right arrow and slide it until you like effect. Repeat with left arrow. If your image loses its contrast, adjust the center arrow moving either direction to get the look you prefer.
