Infographic Inspiration

COMM 130, COMM462

I have loved the idea of doing an infographic for a long time. I remember a few years ago I saw an year in review infographic designed by Amanda Jane Jones which you can see here and it was so interesting to read about someones year in review, and I didn’t even know the person. It was probably the modern design that hooked me  in. So I think for this project I am going to go down that path and do my year in review. My year in review is going to be filled with some big accomplishments that occurred in 2014, including traveling Europe, where I moved to and from, some quick facts about me, and some awesome things I did in 2014. I am sure I will come up with more ideas as I continue to research.

Three variations of your hook:

2014 in Review, Where was Brittany in 2014?, or One Year in Review

Perspective Business Cards MockUp

Poster Frame PSD MockUp

As a senior visual communication student it is essential to brand myself with a logo. To start this process of branding myself I wanted to better understand what my identity was. First I did research to find out more about myself, what styles I like, and what my target audience was. Facebook and Pinterest were great for seeing what others like in me and what I like. From a survey I posted on Facebook I learned what others thought of me. The top ten answers were classy, humorous, smart, beautiful, talented, refreshing, creative, quick witted, happy, & simplistic. From this survey I learned what others, specifically people who know me think about me. I was pleased to receive a lot of really positive feedback about myself and it felt like a bit of a confidence booster. I think a few of the words are things I strive to be like and I was shocked that a few people saw the same attribute in me that I never really picked up on. I took a few of those words into consideration for my branding. I specifically used the words classy and simplistic.

I created a ton of sketches to get the creativity flowing. I have to say I am not much of a sketcher so this was the biggest struggle I faced in the whole project. However I really was able to overcome this struggle when I got into Illustrator. I felt right at home and really could see something great coming together. All three logos are logos that I would really use on my website because they all have qualities that I wanted on my blog, something feminine and classy. I love script as you can see from each logo. I searched for the perfect script for a while and decided to invest some money in a font that I really felt would be a good fit for my identity. I decided to go with the top logo after lots of surveying my peers. I struggled to choose because I really like black and white but I think the watercolor helps to give it a softer and more feminine feel.

The logo I chose is the one with the water color. It has been a dream of mine for years to incorporate some sort of water color into my website and I’m so happy that I took the leap and went with it.The logo that I have created is going to be a very large part of my career. It is the first thing that potential employers, clients, ad agencies, and photographers will see. I am hoping to be able to catch people’s attention and help them to see me through a logo because its my brand identity.

IDENTITY PROJECT: sketches, colors & fonts

Uncategorized

IMG_5308 IMG_5309 IMG_5319 IMG_5325 IMG_5326 IMG_5327

For the first part of this project I began sketching out different kinds of logos. I had a goal of sketching out about 30 but I ended sketching almost 40. Not all of them were pretty or anything I would dare show, but it was nice to see what they would look like on paper and it made me so happy that illustrator is a thing. I am so much more confident sketching in illustrator just because I like the use of the pen tool and fonts instead of my hand drawn ideas. But it was nice to see what I could brainstorm. I’m not exactly sure which is my favorite yet or what direction I am exactly going. I think that will all come about when I really start vectorizing everything in Illustrator.
Untitled-11
For this next part of my project I wanted to narrow down colors and fonts for the project. I have looked for a very long tome for the perfect script font and I have sadly never came across a perfect one for free (if anyone knows one let a sister know) I think my favorite is the one on the very right, called feast, but I am still considering all of them because I think they all offer something different. Along with the font I am very curios in using the top three colors throughout my brand. I am not sure how I will incorporate the colors but I know I want to involve them somewhere from my website to my business card. However I am going to try to keep my logos color very simple and just stick with black and white.
My next step is tackling my logos in illustrator and seeing the vectors begin to come together.

Identity Project Inspiration

COMM 130, COMM 230, COMM462

This Identity project allows me to focus on my personal brand. For this activity I did research to find out more about myself, what styles I like, and what my target audience is. Facebook and Instagram were some great resources into seeing what others not only thought of me but words they first think of when they think of Brittany Austin. Pinterest was another source and something I rely heavily on for daily inspiration to really understand more about what I like and how I want to brand myself. Ultimately this activity will help me really begin to understand how I would like to see a logo for myself.

PINTEREST ACTIVITY:

This is my favorite logo I found on Pinterest. The logo was designed by Claire from Fellow Fellow. I have loved this logo for a while because of the simplicity of it. I love the cursive/script almost hand written look of the words and the metallic gold lettering. I also love the neutral and natural colors of the business card. To read her blog post about the design follow this link.

The elements that I seemed to continue to pin were very simple and timeless. I like lots of white space, watercolors, hand drawn florals, script and sans serif fonts, black and white, light pinks, and metallics.

FACEBOOK CHARACTERISTIC SURVEY:

For my social media survey I went to Facebook and posted:

“I am doing a personal branding project for one of my classes this semester and I need to find some words that you think define me as a person.”

I got a variety of responses and compiled the words used most to describe me:

From this survey I learned what others, specifically people who know me think about me. I was pleased to receive a lot of really positive feedback about myself and it felt like a bit of a confidence booster. I think a few of the words are things I strive to be like and I was shocked that a few people saw the same attribute in me that I never really picked up on.

My logo that I am going to create is going to be a very large part of my career. It is the first thing that potential employers, clients, ad agencies, and photographers will see. The logo that I will create will be based off of this information and my inspiration. I am hoping to be able to catch people’s attention and help them to see me through a logo because its my brand identity.

Ugly Sweater Party Invitation

COMM 130

ugly

Created a simple and fun design for my sisters Ugly Sweater Christmas Party! It was fun researching ideas and seeing the different ideas on Pinterest. My sister sent my some ideas and asked to do a sort of combination of all of them. I created this image on Adobe Illustrator and drew the sweater and deer with help from other images. I used two really awesome fonts including Milkshake & Langdon. For printing I am using Costco, its the least expensive and you get envelopes!

Branding for Right Turn- website, Logo, ads, social media, & photography

I really was so appreciative of working with an up and coming Moving company located our of Vancouver, WA. We started with a bland logo that a friend of theirs created and nothing else. After researching other moving companies and understanding who their target audience is I created a brand for them that would use hip and cool colors, modern fonts, professional photography, and a user friendly website. Right Turn Moving, LLC was looking to attract the college age crowd but their previous logo and social media use attracted no one. I think that college students gravitate to things that are designed well but that can offer them great prices. Through that understanding I created a brand for this company that would be seamless throughout their whole system. From the moment you see their advertisement on your Facebook feed, to when you arrive on their webpage, I wanted something that would help them create brand recognition with a different look than any other moving company ever. I am looking forward to continuing my work with Right Turn and see their speedy progression toward success.

I really enjoyed getting to customize my own photo book. It was hard work though but I was so pleased when I received it in the mail that all the work was 100% worth it. I followed a very simple theme for my photo book that also goes along with my photography website because I used the same front logo. I also used a lot of black and white photos because I love how they look together. I really loved getting use different projects to portray different skills in photography.

I really am excited to have an object like this photo book to add to my portfolio and it is very exciting to go and look back and see the work I have done and the improvements I have made through the semester. It is all very awesome and I can’t wait to use my photo book in the future to show my photography.

For the photo contest I chose to do the one through Adobe. I really liked these three images that I chose because I think they each capture my style for photography very well. I really think they stood out to me in al my work from this semester because they not only include my favorite people but they include the passion that I seek to deliver in my photography.

I chose to use the Adobe photo contest just because I thought it was the best option and style for the photos that I have selected. Each photo was edited using adobe photoshop. I used curves, levels, and some grain. I really think they came out very well even if they play against the rule of thirds.

I submitted my entry on March 29, 2013 & two more on March 31, 2012.

Matte Effect Photoshop Tutorial

COMM 300

PDF tutorial link: Matte Effect

I was inspired to do the matte effect photoshop tutorial after a long desire to learn for myself the cool effect I found on my iPhone apps, VSCO Cam and after light. I researched and found a few different methods and went with the one that added the effect using the curves and levels adjustment layers because they were nondestructive to the actual image. I think that this tutorial is a relevant topic because it allows us to learn about something that we use so readily on our phones that we can apply it to our high quality photography on photoshop.

The process to create the effect is simple fist create an curve adjustment layer. Then in the lower left corner grab the curve and slide it up until you like the effect. Move the top right corner down slightly. Then lastly to finish drag the curve down in the center, just slightly. This will add contrast. Next you can add and adjustment layer for levels. Focus on the lower slide and move both arrows towards the center. Start with the right arrow and slide it until you like effect. Repeat with left arrow. If your image loses its contrast, adjust the center arrow moving either direction to get the look you prefer.

When I was thinking about what I wanted for my framed fine art, I wanted something that I would want to be proud to frame and put in my home. I shot this photo in Jackson just for this purpose. It will be such a great reminder of my time where I lived so close to them and got to enjoy their beauty. For the process on this photo I added a black and white filter as well as a sharpening, brightness, contrast, and matte look on Photoshop. I really can’t wait to hang this image up in my home and for others to experience the beauty of the Tetons.
